René Drouyer is a French post-graduate engineer and a former student of the Fine Arts School. His practice unfolds at the intersection of drawing and printmaking—disciplines he has pursued with constancy, never relinquishing the gesture of the hand nor the materiality of the plate. Through a sustained exploration of intaglio processes—drypoint, etching, aquatint, bitumen-based grounds, and direct acid biting—he develops a body of work attentive to trace, erosion, and the slow emergence of the image. Alongside his work as an engraver, René Drouyer has cultivated a parallel photographic practice. Since 2004, he has collaborated with several photo agencies, and his images—often situated between document and interpretation—have been widely disseminated, notably on the covers of books and magazines.
His trajectory is marked by extended periods spent across diverse geographies, including Vietnam, Côte d’Ivoire, Angola, Russia, Syria, Malaysia, and Thailand. These experiences inform a visual language shaped by displacement, light, and the persistence of memory. After exhibiting in Paris and Lyon in the early 2000s, he has continued to deepen his practice through work in various printmaking studios in Lyon, Paris, and Lisbon.
He recently established his own etching studio in Alvito, in Portugal’s Alentejo region—a place whose quiet intensity resonates with his approach to time and image-making.His photographic work, presented on renedrouyer.com, traces a personal cartography of journeys across nearly every continent, extending and echoing the concerns present in his engraved work.
